Working in Enfield Town
Enfield Town keeps a genuinely old core, the Georgian houses of Gentleman's Row and Chase Side, and then rings outwards through Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the station into a very wide belt of 1930s bay-fronted semis running towards Bush Hill Park, Grange Park and Willow Road. North and west of the town the plots get bigger, with detached houses and bungalows towards Clay Hill and the green belt at Crews Hill. Eastwards the character shifts sharply to terraced and ex-council housing along the Hertford Road, and the town centre itself now carries several blocks of newer flats above and behind the shops.
The A105 Green Lanes segregated cycle tracks operate 24 hours a day and vehicles cannot park, load or unload in them at any time, so on that corridor the van has to go into a side road and hoses are run in from there.
Enfield's controlled zones are signed street by street with different hours rather than one borough-wide rule, so the parking check has to be done per address rather than per postcode.
Water here comes off the chalk via the New River and is hard, which shows up as a dulling mineral residue on wool carpet if it is rinsed and not properly extracted, and as heavy scale in bathrooms.
The water here is hard, which makes no difference to the extraction rinse. What slows drying in these houses is closed trickle vents, so we open windows while we work.
What we get called out for

Rooms and hallways
Hot water extraction, walk-on dry in a couple of hours. Traffic lanes are the usual reason we are rung.

Stairs and landings
The hardest-worked carpet in the house, done tread by tread with a hand tool.

Rugs
Cleaned flat on a groundsheet, dyes tested first. Delicate fibres get a low-moisture clean.

Sofas and chairs
Upholstery tool at lower pressure, fabric code checked before anything gets wet.
Prices
Priced per room, agreed on the phone and not changed on the doorstep. A bedroom is £36, a living room £43. Rugs, sofas and mattresses can join the same visit, because the machine is already in the house.
